Since 2020, Ryanair has partnered with Shell in both Malawi and Turkey to support the Gold Standard’s offsetting initiatives, further developed by CO2 Balance and Enerjisa Enerji.
Balikesir is an on shore independent wind power plant located in Kepsut District, Balikesir, Turkey. The windfarm consists of 52 wind turbines with an annual electricity generation estimated to be 549,200 MWh – making it Turkey’s largest windfarm.
Developed by Enerjisa Enerji Uretim A.S, this gold standard project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and stimulate growth in the wind power industry in Turkey.
The project, which is recognised as a commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), will enable Turkey to encourage and commercialise the use of grid connected renewable energy technologies and markets. Balikesir is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Turkey, to enhance the growth of the wind power industry whilst reducing other pollutants resulting from fossil fuel dependent power generation and creating local employment.
Ryanair has made a conscious effort to partner with credible, change making sustainability projects and this partnership with Balikesir launched in 2020 as part of its commitment to supporting the Gold Standard’s offsetting initiatives, with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions while continuing to be Europe’s greenest airline.
Ryanair’s involvement in the project has helped save 330,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions from entering the atmosphere so far.
This project aims to reduce greenhouse emissions in Turkey by helping to stimulate the growth of the wind power industry. It also increases employment, reduces other pollutants resulting from fossil fuel dependent power generation, helps to reduce Turkey’s increasing energy deficit and diversifies the electricity generation mix and reduces import dependency.
“We’re very pleased to be working with Balikesir as one of our new environmental carbon offset partners. As our loyal customers continue to support the Carbon Offset Scheme, we in turn will continue to work closely with Balikseir, among other sustainability projects, that seek to make a positive impact on our world.”
