Ryanair & Spanish Pilot Union SEPLA Agree On Pay Cuts To Save Spanish Jobs

20 Aug 2020

Ryanair today (18 Aug) welcomed SEPLA’s acceptance for Spanish Pilots of a 4-year agreement, which includes a 20% pay reduction restored over 4 years, along with productivity improvements on rosters, flexible working patterns and annual leave to minimise Spanish Pilot job losses. This agreement gives Ryanair a framework to flex its operation during the Covid-19 crisis and a pathway to recovery when the business returns to normal in the years ahead.

The SEPLA agreement was overwhelmingly accepted by more than 80% of Ryanair’s Spanish Pilots, demonstrating that Ryanair Pilots and their Union are willing to work with the company during the Covid-19 crisis where Ryanair will carry significantly less traffic, at much lower fares for the foreseeable future. Just this week Ryanair announced further 20% reductions to its September and October flight capacity as forward bookings have notably weakened.

Ryanair has demonstrated its ability to work with unions and conclude these agreements across its European operation, including now with our Spanish pilots. Regrettably in Spain it has been impossible to reach an agreement with the cabin crew unions USO and SITCPLA who – uniquely in Europe – continue to obstruct necessary cost savings putting jobs and tourism links at risk. In every other EU market where Ryanair operates, we have been able to negotiate agreements to save jobs, improve productivity and reduce costs in response to the Covid-19 crisis both with Pilot and Cabin Crew Unions. Sadly USO’s and SITCPLA’s failure to negotiate or meaningfully engage will now mean that Spanish Cabin Crew job losses are now more likely as we have no agreement with Spanish cabin crew unions.

Ryanair’s CEO Eddie Wilson said:

“We welcome today’s result that an overwhelming majority (80%) of SEPLA members voted in favour of a 4-year agreement on 20% pay cuts and productivity improvements on rosters and flexible working patterns to save the maximum number of Spanish Pilot jobs.

The strength of this vote demonstrates the commitment from our Spanish pilots to work with Ryanair as we work our way through this Covid-19 crisis over the next few years. It’s regrettable that USO and SITCPLA obstructed a similar agreement for our cabin crew which now puts Spanish cabin crew jobs at risk. We have been able to conclude agreements with Unions throughout Europe, including SEPLA, but both USO and SITPLA have to date been incapable of engaging in any realistic way that takes account of the extraordinary challenges facing the airline industry.

Ryanair Calls For Immediate Addition Of Germany And UK To Ireland’s Green List

19 Aug 2020

Ryanair, Europe’s largest airline, today (Wed 19th Aug) called on the Irish Government to revise its travel Green List to include those EU countries such as the UK and Germany, which have lower Covid case rates than Ireland, and others such as Portugal, Austria, Poland and Greece, whose Covid case rates are similar to Ireland, to allow business travel to/from the EU to resume in Sept, and to allow Ireland’s economy to recover from NPHET’s mismanagement.

Ireland is the ONLY EU country that has maintained an isolationist “closed for business” air travel policy since 1 July last, when most other EU countries reopened for intra-EU flights, and business travel. When the leading scientists and medical experts in most other EU states as well as the ECDC confirmed it was safe to return to intra-EU flying, Ireland’s NPHET adopted a unique and extreme position, which effectively banned intra-EU air travel, except from a tiny list of countries, 4 of which (Greenland, Monaco, Gibraltar and San Marino) have no flights to and from Ireland!

Over the past 8 weeks, when other EU countries such as Germany and Italy, who have an effective test and trace regime, have successfully managed the return of intra-EU flights and economic activity, NPHET has presided over a confusing shambles in Ireland, which has deterred EU visitors, yet it has failed to prevent a rapid rise in Covid cases despite these stringent restrictions.

When Ryanair announced on 29th May that it would return to flying on 1 July, but with mandatory face masks, some NPHET members criticised this move claiming that the evidence on face masks was “not fantastic”. It was only in mid-Aug – 3 months later – that NPHET were finally dragged into supporting mandatory face masks. This is another example of NPHET’s mismanagement of the Covid virus in Ireland and their mishandling of reopening of Ireland’s economy.

A Spokesperson for Ryanair said today:

“NPHET and Ireland are the laughing stock of Europe. We have operated the most isolationist travel policy in Europe since 1 July, yet our Covid case rates are now significantly higher than many other EU countries such as Italy and Germany, who removed intra-EU travel restrictions in July and have successfully managed a return of economic activity with much lower Covid case rates than Ireland. NPHET’s Green List has clearly failed to prevent the recent surge in Covid cases in Ireland, and since Germany and the UK now have lower Covid case rates than Ireland, it is essential that these large economies are immediately added to Ireland’s Green List, or better still, Ireland’s failed Green List is abandoned altogether for flights to/from the EU and the UK.

UK & EU States 14 Day Covid Case Rate (18 Aug)
High Medium Low
Spain 132 Denmark 29 UK 20
Belgium 98 Austria 27 Germany 15
Malta 89 Portugal 26 Norway 14
Romania 61 Poland 26 Slovakia 10
Netherlands 46 Greece 23 Italy 10
France 41 Ireland 23 Finland 5
Sweden 39 Cyprus 22 Hungary 4

The Irish Govt should be challenging NPHET on its failure to deliver an effective test and tracing system in this country. As other EU countries introduced airport testing, NPHET are still filling in paper forms that are not followed up, and imposing a defective 14 day quarantine, which has destroyed inbound tourism to Ireland. When our schools return at the end of Aug, Ireland’s hotels and restaurants will be empty because of the absence of EU visitors caused by NPHET’s mismanagement of intra-EU travel since 1 July last.

When the scientists and medical experts of most other EU countries supported the safe return of intra-EU air travel since 1 July last, where is the science that supports NPHET’s unique and isolationist Green List, which has failed to prevent a second wave of Covid cases here in Ireland? At a time when Ireland has just 14 Covid patients in our hospitals, why are our businesses being prevented from booking air travel to and from other EU countries – many with lower Covid case rates than Ireland – when citizens of these EU countries are travelling freely and without Ireland’s Green List restrictions.

NPHET have spectacularly mismanaged this failed Green List. The Govt must now act to remove travel restrictions on business travel to/from Germany, the UK and these other EU countries where the Covid case rates are as similar or lower than Ireland. It is Governments job to govern, to reopen our economy, to remove these failed quarantines, and introduce an effective and efficient test and tracing system so that Ireland’s schools and businesses can get back to work in September.”

Ryanair Cuts Capacity In Sept & Oct By Almost 20% As Forward Bookings Weaken

17 Aug 2020

Ryanair, Europe’s largest airline, today (Mon 17th Aug) announced that it would reduce its flight capacity by 20% during the months of Sept & Oct as forward bookings have notably weakened over the last 10 days, given continuing uncertainty over recent Covid case rates in some EU countries.

Ryanair confirmed that most of these cuts would be frequency reductions rather than route closures, and they will be heavily focused on those countries such as Spain, France and Sweden, where rising recent Covid case rates have led to increased travel restrictions, and Ireland which continues to impose a uniquely restrictive Green List, which imposes 14 day quarantines on visitors from most other EU countries such as Germany (16.3) and the UK (18.6), which have lower Covid case rates over the last 14 days than Ireland (22.1).

A Spokesperson for Ryanair said today:

These capacity cuts and frequency reductions for the months of Sept & Oct are necessary given the recent weakness in forward bookings due to Covid restrictions in a number of EU countries. Any effected passengers in Sept received email notification earlier today advising them of their options. Similar communications will be issued to the small number of affected passengers in Oct later today. Over the past 2 weeks as a number of EU countries have raised travel restrictions, forward bookings especially for business travel into Sept & Oct have been negatively affected, and it makes sense to reduce frequencies so that we tailor our capacity to demand over the next 2 months.

Proper testing at airports, and effective tracing (as is being conducted in Germany and Italy) is the only realistic and proportionate method of supervising safe intra-EU air travel while effectively limiting the spread of the Covid-19 virus.”

Calls On Irish Government To Add Eu Countries With Lower Covid Case Rates To Ireland’s Green List

Ryanair, Europe’s largest airline, today (Mon 17th Aug) announced that it would reduce its flight capacity by 20% during the months of Sept & Oct as forward bookings have notably weakened over the last 10 days, given uncertainty over recent Covid case rates in some EU countries.

Ryanair confirmed that most of these cuts would be frequency reductions rather than route closures, and they will be heavily focused on those countries such as Spain, France and Sweden, where rising recent Covid case rates have led to increased travel restrictions, and also Ireland, which continues to impose a uniquely restrictive Green List, which includes 14 day quarantines on visitors from most other EU countries such as Germany (16.3) and the UK (18.6), even though they have lower Covid case rates over the last 14 days than Ireland (22.1)

Ryanair called on the Irish Government to include those EU countries, with lower or similar Covid case rates, to Ireland’s Green List, without delay, so that business and other family related travel can resume in Sept (when schools reopen thereby removing the “risk” of EU family holidays) which would allow Germany (16.3), the UK (18.6), Austria (22.4), Portugal (26.0) and Poland (25.7) be added to the Irish Green List.

A Spokesperson for Ryanair said today:

These capacity cuts and frequency reductions for the months of Sept & Oct are unavoidable given the recent weakness in forward bookings due to Covid restrictions in a number of EU countries. Any effected passengers in Sept received email notification today advising them of their options.

We again call on the Irish Government to amend its Green List of travel counties to include those EU countries with lower or similar 14 day Covid case rates, most notably Germany whose Covid case rate is 25% lower than Ireland, and which will allow for some resumption of normal business and economic travel in Sept & Oct once the schools reopen.

Ireland’s isolationist Green List has failed to prevent this recent rise in Covid case rates, despite Ireland having the most restrictive travel quarantine of any EU country since 1 July last. This is in marked contrast to the performance of Italy, where the 14 day Covid case rate is less than half of Ireland’s, despite the fact that Italy has been open to EU travel and tourism since 1 July. Proper testing at airports, and effective tracing (as is being conducted in Germany and Italy) is the only realistic and proportionate method of supervising safe intra-EU travel while effectively limiting the spread of the Covid-19 virus.”
