Ryanair, Europe’s largest airline and global energy group, Repsol, today (4 May) signed a Memo of Understanding (MOU) to advance the supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at Ryanair airports across Spain & Portugal further advancing the airline’s Pathway to Net Zero strategy.
While SAF is a key enabler of aviation decarbonisation, it only accounts for a small fraction of the current jet fuel usage worldwide. This agreement with Repsol gives Ryanair access to up to 155,000 tonnes (52m gallons) of SAF between 2025 and 2030 (equiv. to over 28,000 flights from Dublin to Madrid), saving approximately 490,000 tonnes in CO2 emissions.
Ryanair has set itself an ambitious goal of using 12.5% SAF by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050, and this agreement demonstrates both Ryanair and Repsol’s commitment to working together and investing in SAF supply fuels.
Speaking at Repsol’s Headquarters in Madrid, Ryanair DAC’s CEO Eddie Wilson, said:
“SAF plays a key role in Ryanair’s Pathway to Net Zero strategy and our goal of using 12.5% SAF by 2030. Achieving this requires multiple different feedstocks and production methods and we’re encouraged that Repsol are looking at multiple solutions. This agreement helps Ryanair secure access to c.15% of this ambitious goal.
Repsol is a key sustainability partner for Ryanair, and we look forward to building on this collaboration as our Group grows to carry 225m passengers annually by FY26.”
Valero Marin, Repsol’s Executive Managing Director of Client, added:
“This collaboration agreement with Ryanair, Europe’s leading passenger airline, reinforces our commitment to the aviation sector and it is another step in Repsol’s commitment to renewable fuels. The aviation sector needs solutions such as SAF fuels to support the decarbonization process it is currently undergoing. Ryanair, Europe’s largest airline, today (12 Apr) announced that it has expanded its partnership with the world leading sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supplier, Neste, to power its full schedule of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) flights with a 40% SAF blend from 1 Apr.
This significant increase in SAF use represents the latest milestone development in Ryanair’s ambitious goal of operating 12.5% of flights with SAF by 2030 and further supports Ryanair’s Pathway to Net Zero by 2050 decarbonisation goals, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 32%.
Ryanair’s Director of Sustainability, Thomas Fowler said:
“Ryanair is delighted to extend our partnership with Neste to increase the amount of Ryanair flights at Amsterdam being powered with a 40% blend of SAF from a third of flights to our entire Amsterdam operation from 1 April.
Increasing the use of SAF is a fundamental pillar of our Pathway to Net Zero by 2050 decarbonisation strategy and this increase at Amsterdam will reduce greenhouse gas emissions of our flights from there by 32%.
We look forward to continuing our growing partnership with Neste as we further progress our goal of operating 12.5% of Ryanair flights with SAF by 2030.”

“Decarbonising aviation is more important than ever, and we are proud to support Ryanair in achieving their ambitious Pathway to Net Zero by 2050. Ryanair today (7 Dec) condemned the EU Commission’s failure to support the vote of the European Parliament to extend ETS (enviro taxes) onto long haul flights which account for over 54% of EU aviation emissions but deliver just 6% of EU passengers. As a result of this indefensible exemption for the richest passengers flying to/from the EU, it is Europe’s short haul passengers who will continue to pay an unfair burden of 100% ETS, while generating less than half of EU aviation emissions.
Ryanair’s CEO, Michael O’Leary said:
“Yet again the Commission led by Ursula von der Leyen has abandoned the environment and Europe’s ordinary families. The Commission’s failure to support the Parliament vote means that Europe’s most polluting flights (long-haul and transfer passengers) who create the majority of EU aviation emissions, will continue to be exempt from paying their fair share of ETS taxes. While the richest Americans, Europeans, and Asians on long haul flights pay zero enviro taxes, Europe’s most price sensitive passengers and their families travelling on short-haul flights, many to the peripheral Member States such as Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Greece, Malta, and Cyprus, and who have NO ALTERNATIVE to flying, are forced to pay all of Europe’s ETS taxes, while they generate less than half of EU aviation emissions. This is clearly unfair.
Yet again, Ursula von der Leyen and the EU Commission have let down Europe’s citizens and Europe’s environment.”
Ryanair, la plus grande compagnie aérienne d’Europe, et le groupe énergétique mondial Shell, ont signé aujourd’hui (jeudi 1er décembre) un protocole d’accord (MoU) pour faire progresser l’approvisionnement en carburant aviation durable (SAF) dans plus de 200 aéroports Ryanair en Europe, avec un accent particulier sur l’approvisionnement en SAF dans les plus grandes bases de Ryanair comme Dublin et Londres Stansted.
Bien que le SAF soit un élément clé de la décarbonisation de l’aviation, il ne représente actuellement qu’une petite fraction de la consommation mondiale de kérosène. Cet accord avec Shell donne à Ryanair un accès potentiel à 360 000 tonnes (120 millions de gallons) de SAF entre 2025 et 2030, ce qui permettra d’économiser environ 900 000 tonnes d’émissions de CO2 (soit l’équivalent de plus de 70 000 vols de Dublin à Milan). Les SAF couverts par ce protocole d’accord pourraient être produits à partir de plusieurs technologies différentes et d’un large éventail de matières premières durables.
Cet accord, qui a été signé ce matin au Centre de recherche sur l’aviation durable du Trinity College de Dublin (TCD) (où Ryanair et TCD ont organisé une Journée de l’aviation durable), démontre l’engagement de Ryanair et de Shell à travailler ensemble pour investir dans les carburants d’approvisionnement SAF. Sebbene il SAF sia un fattore chiave per la decarbonizzazione dell’aviazione, attualmente rappresenta solo una piccola parte consumo mondiale di carburante per aerei.
