Ryanair & UK Pilot Union BALPA agree on Pay Cuts to save UK Jobs

02 Jul 2020

Ryanair today (2 July) welcomed BALPA’s acceptance for UK Pilots of a 4-year agreement, which includes a 20% pay reduction restored over 4 years, along with productivity improvements on rosters, flexible working patterns and annual leave to minimise UK Pilot job losses. This agreement gives Ryanair a framework to flex its operation during the Covid-19 crisis and a pathway to recovery when the business returns to normal in the years ahead.

Ryanair welcomes this week’s confirmation that the BALPA agreement was overwhelmingly accepted by 96% of Ryanair’s UK Pilots on a turnout of 90% which demonstrates that Ryanair Pilots are willing to work with the company during the Covid-19 crisis where Ryanair will carry 50% less traffic, at significantly lower fares for the foreseeable future.

Ryanair’s CEO Eddie Wilson said:

“We welcome this week’s result that 96% of BALPA members have voted in favour of a 4-year agreement on 20% pay cuts and productivity improvements on rosters and flexible working patterns to save the maximum number of UK Pilot jobs.

The strength of this vote demonstrates the commitment from our pilots in the UK to work with Ryanair as we work our way through this crisis over the next number of years”.

Ryanair Flying High In July

Over 1,000 Daily Low Fare Flights Across Europe

Ryanair, Europe’s No.1 airline, today (Wed 1st July) celebrated its return to flying with over 1,000 daily flights all across Europe, to get European tourism moving again. This is great news for millions of Ryanair guests who are snapping up low fare holidays in July & Aug, and also for thousands of Ryanair crew members, and our airport support teams, who are returning to work after the 3½ month Covid-19 shutdown. Ryanair will operate over 1,000 daily flights across 200 European airports, restoring almost 90% of its pre-Covid-19 route network, albeit with lower frequencies and lower fares.

In line with the recommendations of EASA and the ECDC, Ryanair has introduced new health measures for both our crews and our passengers, which will minimise the risk of Covid-19 on all Ryanair flights. These include mandatory face masks/coverings, fewer check bags, cashless inflight services, and improved hygiene procedures.

To celebrate today’s return to flying, Ryanair is releasing 500,000 seats on sale from just €19.99 one way for travel in late Aug & Sept. These fares are the lowest ever offered by Ryanair during the peak summer months, and customers looking to snap up holiday bargains should book these low fare seats on the www.Ryanair.com website until midnight Fri 3 July.

Ryanair Group’s CEO Michael O’Leary said:

“We have been back flying approx. 250 flights daily for the last 10 days of June to bring our aircraft, our crews and our maintenance teams back into service. Starting today, we are operating 1,000 daily flights across our entire European network, which is approx. 40% of our normal July capacity. We expect in July to carry more than 4.5 million customers, many of them families taking well-earned Mediterranean holidays after the severe challenges of the Covid-19 lockdown, home schooling, etc.

These 1,000 daily flights mark an important turning point for Ryanair and for the tourism industry of Europe, which supports so many jobs and small businesses. We, together with our airport partners, are following the health guidelines of EASA and ECDC to ensure that our customers and their families can travel safely while minimising the risk of Covid-19.

We welcome this week’s decision by the UK Government to replace its failed “form filling” quarantine with air bridges to most of Europe. We also call on the Irish Government to scrap its equally useless form filling exercise at airports, which does not deliver any quarantine benefit whatsoever, particularly when there is very little follow up and no control on the accuracy of the implementation of these forms. Ireland’s tourism industry, which supports 100,000 jobs, in July and Aug is heavily dependent on welcoming UK and European visitors, and this useless form filling will deter visitors, and damage Irish tourism and jobs.

It’s time for Europe to go back flying again, it’s time to reboot Europe’s tourism industry, and Ryanair is proud to lead this initiative with over 1,000 daily flights at fares, for travel in late Aug & Sept, that start from just €19.99 one way.”

Ryanair To Appeal Wizz Air’s Desperate Buzz Injunction In Hungary

30 Jun 2020

Ryanair, Europe’s largest airline group, today (Tues, 30th June) announced that it will appeal Wizz Air’s desperate interim injunction to block Buzz, a subsidiary of the Ryanair Group, from using its “Buzz” brand in Hungary. Over the past 17 years, the Buzz brand has been part of the Ryanair Group, and it is currently one of Poland’s biggest airlines and on track to becoming the clear winner in competition with higher fare Wizz. This desperate Hungarian court case brought by Wizz in Budapest, seeking to block Buzz from using its 17 year old name and brand in Hungary, shows that Wizz cannot compete on price or service with the Ryanair owned Buzz airline.

Michael O’Leary, Ryanair’s Group CEO, said:

“Due to Buzz’s unbeatable combination of lower fares and industry leading service, it is on track to become Poland’s number one airline. It’s clear that Wizz Air is terrified of Buzz’s lower fare competition, which is why they are trying to block Buzz using its Buzz brand in Hungary where Wizz are cutting aircraft and capacity in Budapest. They should stop wasting time with lawyers and start focusing their energy on reducing their costs to rival lower cost Buzz.

We look forward to overturning this silly injunction on appeal, and we will continue to focus on Buzz’s expansion in Hungary, as the lowest fare, industry leading service winner across Central and Eastern Europe, even while Wizz are cutting aircraft and capacity in Budapest. Those that can, compete, and those that can’t – like Wizz- run to Court seeking injunctions to protect them.”

  • No queuing – during boarding no customers will be allowed to dwell in boarding stairwells or air bridges; queuing will not be allowed on board at toilets.
  • Cashless Payments – card payments only for all inflight purchases and airport fees/charges.
  • Limited Trolley Service – a limited inflight Getaway Cafe service will operate offering pre-packaged snacks and drinks; Ryanair’s Runway Retail inflight magazine will be only available on the Ryanair app.
  • Aircraft Sanitization – all aircraft disinfected daily with hospital grade disinfectant chemicals that are effective for over 24 hours.
  • HEPA filters – fleet fitted with state of the art filtering system, which removes airborne particles and recycles air flow every 3-4 minutes.

Ryanair’s Eddie Wilson said:

“We are delighted to be back flying from 1 July, and we encourage our guests and our people to follow Ryanair’s new ‘Healthy Flying’ measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and protect them across their whole journey.

All the aircraft are fitted with state of the art filters – which remove any airborne particles while you travel –  and every aircraft is disinfected daily with chemicals that are effective for over 24 hours. With temperature checks, face masks, cashless flights and self-service where possible, our customers can rest assured that we are doing everything we can to reduce human interaction and protect their health when flying Ryanair.

We will now require our guests to follow a set of simple guidelines to help prevent the spread of Covid-19. At Ryanair we are doing everything we can to return to flying so we can reunite friends and family, allow people to return to work, and begin to restart Europe’s tourism industry, upon which millions of jobs, especially for young people, now depend.  We thank our customers in advance for flying Ryanair and for complying with these additional public health measures which are promote the welfare of our guests and our people.”

Ryanair Calls On The EU To Block €3.4bn Illegal State Aid To KLM

26 Jun 2020

Ryanair today (26 June) called on the EU Commission to block the latest illegal State Aid of €3.4bn to Dutch flag carrier KLM, which equates to a subsidy of €200 on behalf of every man, woman and child of Holland. The Dutch Govt are great at preaching fiscal conservatism to other EU countries but when it comes to bailing out flag carrier airlines they write subsidy checks even faster than Mrs Merkel.

Ryanair Group CEO Michael O’Leary said:

“16 years after Air France’s takeover of KLM, every Dutch citizen now has to pay €200 each to prop-up Air France-KLM, while each French citizen will only pay a subsidy €100. This is a poor deal for the “trading nation”, which likes to lecture other EU countries about fiscal rules but has no problem breaking these rules when it comes to subsidising KLM. This Dutch government subsidy is also bad news for competition and consumer interests as it will further delay the necessary reforms at the bloated Air France-KLM.  For this €200 KLM subsidy, every Dutch man, woman and child could buy 5 flights with Ryanair, instead of paying for the failure and inefficiency at Air France-KLM.

We call on the European Commission to block this subsidy doping to KLM, which will further reduce competition and consumer choice in the Dutch and French markets”.
